What is LaVerkin?

In the hot desert of Southern Utah, nestled in a Valley surrounded by Southern Utah’s signature rugged red rocks and on the north bank of the Virgin River, is a tiny town called LaVerkin. And at 71 N. Main Street in La Verkin, you will find The Ardella Cottage.

LaVerkin is a remarkable little city with a history rich in heritage and unmatched community spirit.”

LaVerkin is a unique town with a unique name. No one is sure where exactly where it came from–maybe a mis-pronunciation of the Spanish for “La Virgen” as it is the Virgin river that sustains life in this, otherwise arid land.

Imagine 4th of July celebrations where the entire town gathers at the square to run foot races and fireworks. A place where everyone knew each other and children roamed the town freely finding friends and adventures on every street. This was what it was like to grow up in LaVerkin.

Ardella’s parents had been some of the first settlers of the area. The Gubler brothers came to settle and farm the valley at the turn of the century. This provided a bridge between the settlements of Toquerville to the North and Hurricane to the south. LaVerkin first got a post office in 1903. Settlers built a canal and began farming the once arid land. Over the years crops such as sorghum and peach orchards sustained the small community.

Aside from the quaint charm and pioneer history of LaVerkin, there is a major claim to fame that begin to draw visitors to this region from near and far. It is a mere 21 miles from LaVerkin to the entrance of Zion National Park. Visitors from all over the world pass through LaVerkin as they turn to go up the road to see the spectacular Zion National Park. LaVerkin is in the heart of what is known as the Grand Circle. Not only is it near Zion, but in the region of Bryce National Park and the Grand Canyon, as well. It is truly a unique and fascinating landscape!

Whether you are coming to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, looking for some small-town charm and history, or wanting access to spectacular National Parks, The Ardella Cottage will be the perfect base for your journey!

I am wondering about your 4thof July activities. I am looking for a pace to spend the day away from Las Vegas and I pass though your town all the time on my way to Zion and was thinking of spending some time in town in between hiking and heading home. I have 2 places I am looking into sadly with your lack of info you are not one of them. I hope you can change that.
    Many Blessings
